Palmdale Geographic and Demographic Fast Facts

  • Palmdale is a city in Southern California.
  • It is situated in the center of the northern LA County and is approx 1 hour drive from Los Angeles (north).
  • It is separated from Los Angeles city by San Gabriel Mountains.
  • It is the thirty-third most populous city in the US state of California.
  • It is the 2nd largest city in the Antelope Valley and the 5th largest city in the Mojave Desert population-wise.
  • It is included in the “Top 100 Largest Cities in US”, by geographic area.
  • It is a part of the twin city- Palmdale-Lancaster. Lancaster is the immediate neighbor of Palmdale.
  • The city is prone to earthquakes, having situated next to the San Andreas Fault. 
  • The ethnic composition of Palmdale includes: White- 49.0%, Non-Hispanic White-24.5%, African American-14.8%, Native American-0.9%, Asian-4.3%, Pacific Islander-0.2%, from other races-25.4%, and two or more races-5.4%.

Palmdale History Fast Facts

  • Before Palmdale was established, the area was occupied by the Kitanemuk Indians.
  • On April 20, 1886, within the limits of the area the first European Settlement was established as village called “Palmenthal”.  On 17th June 1888, the village was officially established.
  • Many farming families settled in Palmenthal by the 1890s to grow fruits and grains.
  • By 1899, settlers moved to a new community Palmdale, which was near to the Southern Pacific railroad tracks.
  • The first newspaper of Palmdale- the Palmdale Post was published in 1915. Now, it is known as the Antelope Valley Press.
  • The first and foremost link between Los Angeles and Palmdale was finished in 1921 and is now known as Sierra Highway.
  • The first high school in Palmdale was established in 1957- Palmdale High School.
  • On August 24 1962, Palmdale was officially incorporated as a city. It was the first community in Antelope Valley to be formed into a city.
  • State Highway 14 or the Antelope Valley Freeway-a link between Los Angeles and Palmdale was completed in 1964.
  • In 2010, the Palmdale Regional Medical Center opened.
  • Until WWII, the primary industry was Agriculture. After WWII, defense and aerospace sector grew in Palmdale with the establishment of the U.S. Air Force Plant 42 in Palmdale and Edwards Air Force Base in the Kern County.
